Pellas and Gawain are brothers in arms who fall in love with the same fair maiden, Arcade. When Pellas discovers his friend in a tryst with Arcade, he raises his sword – but cannot strike so abandons his weapon. In seeing the sword Gawain recognises his sense of righteousness and recognising his wrong doing. Gawain convinces Arcade to stay with Pellas – he was the first to win her favour.
